Camera angles in a movie

I chose the movie called cloud nine which is about a girl who is working hard so she can become a better snowboarder for competitions after she found out that she was not as good as she thought.

This shot is a low shot and also a crab shot. It follows her slowly to the left as she does her trick as she is practicing. This particular scene moves the movie along since right before this scene she kept trying this move and failed time and time again. This clip finally showed the successful outcome and how she had finally mastered the move. It makes the viewer feel excited for her and also from this pov it shows how truly difficult the trick is as she is a an almost 180 degree jump. This pov left the viewer also feeling small as the low shot makes the person on top appear larger. Overall, this shot is used to carry along her progress while demonstrating the move.

This is a high shot. In this scene she keeps falling down but she also keeps getting back up. This scene shows all the footprints representing how many times she has walked the path showing how she keeps going and never gives up. Also, it shows how far she has to walk to go over and over again also representing her determination. Without this scene we wouldn’t understand how much work she put into making the cloud nine and it would have seemed unlikely that she would have actually mastered the move and completed it successfully. This pov shot also makes the viewer feel like she is small and her path is large.

This is a over the shoulder shot but it’s also a close up shot. It conveys the main characters (Kayla Morgan) feelings to her co star (will cloud). She is talking with him about how she wants to learn the cloud nine a impossible move and he believes it’s too dangerous as he broke his legs attempting it and swore off snowboarding. The close up shows every emotion that she is showing through her facial expressions and it also shows what will is looking at as it gives the exact point of view that he has. The camera is almost as close as wills face is to Kayla’s. They used this camera angle to move the story along because without showing his empathy towards her in the scene through the close up pov, we wouldn’t understand why he finally chose to teach her. Her emotions in this scene is what convinced him. This makes the viewer feel involved in the conversation as they are feeling over the shoulder and watching up close of the conversation.

This is a pov shot also known as a point of view shot. I believe that they used this shot as a very interesting opener to catch the watchers attention as they can see what the board sees while snowboarding at a high speed. It catches the thrilling views and draws in the watcher to watch more. This affects the scene as it starts out the movie with a action clip as an opener. This makes the watcher and myself feel exhilarated.
